External Hard Disk not working on macOS Tahoe? This might Fix it!
Right after installing the macOS Tahoe on my Mac, the first thing I was greeted with was the new Liquid Glass, which I have iterated countless times before in the past as well, that I hate it to the core. But let’s keep that hate for the time being and focus on something more important- issues with the external hard drive.
Since the update, it refuses to mount any of my external Hard Disks, even if they have been formatted in APFS. I have tried to format them again from the MacStudio, but was greeted with the error: “unable to mount”. I have another Mac, which is still running Sequoia [thankfully], and it is able to mount this drive without any issue whatsoever. So this all but confirms that the issue is from the OS end; there’s nothing wrong with my drive.
An interesting thing to note is that I tried manually mounting these drives using the Terminal, and it says “successfully mounted,” but the disk was still grayed out in Disk Utility, and it showed not mounted. So I tried all the usual workarounds, including different ports and cables, but none of them spelled out success.
Finally, I found an interesting tweak right out of the blue, and the issue was fixed within seconds. So I thought of documenting my findings here such that if anyone else faces the same problem, then this method might help them rectify this issue once and for all.
External Hard Disk Not Working on macOS Tahoe? This Trick Might Fix it!

The culprit in my case is the ESET Endpoint Security . It has a feature named Device Control , which blocks all USB Connections to the Mac. However, I had the same software installed on my other Mac [Sequoia], but there wasn’t any such issue there. Why is that the case? Well, turns out the settings of ESET gets refreshed upon a major software upgrade, and it turned on the Device Control as soon as the OS upgrade was finished.
