How to Change Region on OnePlus on Locked Bootloader

One of the most common ways of changing region on a OnePlus device is to unlock the bootloader and then flash the desired region’ firmware in Fastboot Mode. While this will easily get the job done, however, it comes with a few risks as well. Apart from the obvious one of the device undergoing a reset, unlocking will also lead to issues with Play Integrity, Widevine Certification, among others.

So what else can be done? Well, there does exist a nifty workaround using which you can easily change the region on your OnePlus device having a locked bootloader. Yes, you read that write, it is very much possible! And in this guide, we will show you how to get that job done. So without any further ado, let’s get started.

How to Change Region on OnePlus on Locked Bootloader

CHANGE REGION LOCKED BOOTLOADER ONEPLUS - 1

While this process should not reset your device, still, take a complete device backup, just to be on the safe side. Droidwin and its members wouldn’t be held responsible in case of a thermonuclear war, your alarm doesn’t wake you up, or if anything happens to your device and data by performing the steps below.

Do note that this trick will not work when changing regions from CN [ColorOS] to Global [OxygenOS] or vice versa. You should be on the same OS build for this tweak to work. For instance, you can go from India to the EU, the EU to Global, and so on, as all these regions have the same underlying OS [OxygenOS]. In short, region changes on Oxygen OS will work, but not in-between Color OS and Oxygen OS.

  1. First off, make sure there’s no pending update. If there’s one, then download it right away.
  2. Next, download and install the Oxygen Updater app on your device.
  3. Then launch it, verify your device, change the Update method to Stable (Full), and hit Next.
  4. Then go to the Settings menu and enable Advanced Mode > tap Enable.
  5. Now go back to the first tab and download the firmware.
  6. It will be the latest available one, which is also installed on your device [from STEP 1].
  7. Once downloaded, again go to the Settings menu of the app and tap on Device.
  8. This time, choose the region for which region you want the firmware.
  9. Also, change the Update Method to Stable (full).
  10. Then go back to the first tab and download the firmware.
  11. Once done, disable WiFi and Carrier Data.
  12. Then go to Settings and tap on Version Number 7 times to enable Developer Options.
  13. Now go to the Update Page, tap on the overflow icon at the top right, and choose local Install.
  14. Then select the firmware which you are currently on [the one you downloaded in STEP 5/6]. But don’t click Install!
  15. Minimize this page, and open File Manager. Then, copy the file name of the firmware you are currently on and give this file any random name.
  16. Whereas, rename the new region firmware [which you got in STEP 10] to the one which you had just copied [your current region firmware].
  17. Let’s say your current region firmware name is OP_15_IN and your new one is OP_15_GLO [you’re converting from India to Global]. So you have to rename the OP_15_GLO to OP_15_IN and rename OP_15_IN to any other random name, let’s say XYZ.
  18. Now go back to the Update menu and hit Install. The updater menu will be installing the file name OP_15_IN, which for us is the OP_15_GLO!
  19. Once installed, hit Reboot. Your device will now reboot to the Global firmware!
