How to Enable Freeform Windows in Pixel Devices

Not only is Google notoriously infamous for killing its products without any logical explanation [here, have a look at Google Graveyard ], but it tends to now emulate the same behavior inside the Android ecosystem. The Freeform Windows feature on the Pixel device is a perfect example of the same. Similar to your PC, it allows you to run apps inside floating, draggable, and resizable windows. But why would you like to do so? Well, there are quite a few benefits attached to it.

Freeform Window on a Nothing Device

For instance, you can move the app window anywhere on screen, resize it, and have multiple apps open at once. Moreover, each app tends to stay active while visible, which isn’t usually the case with a split-screen view, as one of the two apps tends to get paused by the OS in that case. However, its best use case is when you are planning to use your device in Desktop Mode. While Google still has a long way to go when compared with Samsung’s Dex, it has taken a great first step.

However, as is the case with every other Google product, the Silicon Valley giant, for some reason, decided to bid adieu to the Freeform Window feature from Android 16 onwards. There’s no point in trying to argue why the tech giant did so, because this isn’t the first time it has taken such a drastic action, and nor will it be the last. So let’s turn our attention towards something more important, and that is how to bring back this feature, and if it is even possible in the first place. Let’s find out.

  1. Download and extract Android SDK Platform Tools on your PC.
  2. Now enable USB Debugging on your device and connect it to PC.
  3. Then, open Command Prompt inside platform-tools and type in: adb shell settings put global enable_freeform_support 1 adb shell settings put global force_resizable_activities 1
  4. Now open the Recents app, long-press on the app icon of the desired window, and you’ll get the Freeform option. Just tap on it to open the window in Freeform mode.
