How to Install Extensions on Chrome Browser on Android
In this guide, we will show you the steps to download, install, and use extensions in the Chrome browser for Android. Back in April, we got the first taste of these extensions. But being in the early builds, there were a few issues with it. First off, you’ll have to manually download .crx files and then drag-and-drop them into the extensions page.
As if that wasn’t enough, Chrome would end up deleting all installed extensions every time you restarted the browser. Fortunately, both these issues have been addressed, and we can now finally welcome abode extensions directory from the Chrome Web Store!
Do note that there are still some issues, for instance, the main extension icon didn’t work [though individual ones did], not all extensions correctly work, and there are some UI scaling issues [though it’s mostly due to our own doing, more on that later]. So without any further ado, let’s get started.
How to Install Extensions on Chrome Browser on Android

To install extensions directly from the Chrome Web Store, you’ll have to trick Chrome into thinking that you are currently using a desktop. To do so, you’ll have to tweak the device’s Smallest Width to 600. [Remember we talked about “some UI scaling issues”? This is the reason why.] Anyways, doing so will be the last step, before that, you’ll have to checkmark a few other prerequisites off the list. So let’s get started.
- Head over to Google’s download page for the “desktop” builds of Chrome Android.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom to get the latest build [the one with the largest number].
- Go to that folder and download the “chrome-android-desktop.zip” file.
- Extract the ZIP, go to chrome-android-desktop > apks, and install “ChromePublic.apk”.
- Now go to Settings > About Phone > Tap on Build Number 7 times.
- Then go to Settings > System > Developer Options > Smallest Width and note down the current width. Then change it to 600.
- This will trick Chrome into believing that you are using a desktop.
- Now, head to the Chrome Web Store and install the Chrome extensions of your choice.
- Once you have installed the extension, you can now change the Smallest Width back to its default value.
