How to Open Chrome Downloads/History/Bookmark in Same Tab

Yesterday, I launched the Bookmarks page on the Chrome browser and noticed that it opened straightaway in a new tab. The same behavior was imitated by the Downloads and History pages as well. So I went to numerous forums to find out if I was the only one impacted by this change; it turned out the forums were already flooded with numerous complaints regarding this. One of the Silver Product Experts in Google forums had this to say regarding this development:

The recent behavior where bookmarks always open in a new tab on Android is due to a Chrome update/change in tab handling. Currently, there isn’t a direct setting to force bookmarks to open in the same tab.

So what’s the infuriation all about? Isn’t it a good thing that the pages opening in a new tab would give you a less cluttered UI? Well, for me, it’s just the reverse. The unnecessary opening of tabs will only make it more challenging to find the tabs that we actually need. So, is there a way to deal with this unnecessary fiasco that Google has created? Well, there is one, and in this guide, we will make you aware of just that. So without further ado, let’s get started.

It is recommended that you try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and then see which one spells out success. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

Without Flags

If you are not looking to get your hands dirty with the experimental flags, then your best and only course of action is to long-press on the desired bookmark and select Open in this tab.

Using Flags

This is a much better and a more long-lasting fix for this issue. Here’s what needs to be done:

  1. Launch Chrome and head over to the below location: chrome://flags/#android-native-pages-in-new-tab
  2. Now change the flag state to Disabled and hit Relaunch.
  3. Upon a reboot, Chrome will be back to its earlier page launch style.
