How to Turn Off Gemini AI Search in Google Photos

AI has ruined countless businesses, apps, and services. Wherever it has set its foot, it has only made it worse. I know this is an unpopular and highly debatable opinion that will face backlash from left, right, and center. But hey, I’m up for all debates, but for now, let’s talk about one of the most popular gallery apps that seems to have caught the unfortunate wrath of AI. Yes, we are talking about Google Photos.

It beholds a slew of useful features that many other galleries lack, but the two most crucial ones for me are the 15GB free storage space and its deep search functionality. For the unaware, it tends to perform a deep search and bring up the result within seconds. Let’s say you input University in the search field, then not only will it bring up all the images having the university keyword, but it will also bring forward the images of convocation, degree, university campus, freshers, and all the other related photos and videos linked with your query. And this is something quite commendable.

However, the Silicon Valley giant decided to ruin it in the best possible manner- by incorporating Gemini into it. So now, when you perform a search for University, the search result will be filled with University images from Google search! If I really wanted to search University images online, why would I do so from Google Photos, instead of using an actual browser?

Well, the thing is, AI and logic cannot go hand-in-hand. So, is there any way to bring back sanity in the Photos app? Fortunately, yes! There does exist a nifty workaround using which you can easily turn off Gemini AI Search in the Google Photos app. So without any further ado, let’s show you how this could be carried out.

Out of all the testing phones that I have, only one of them has the “Use Gemini in Photos” or “Search with Ask Photos” feature, even though all of them have the AI search. So how can you turn off the AI search on those phones? Well, there exists a nifty workaround that is even better than the one we shared above.

You just need to double-tap on the AI search, and it will take you to the normal search. However, once you are done searching, the manual search will once again be replaced by AI, and the next time you’ll again have to use the double-tap tweak. Fortunately, that isn’t much of an effort, but still, it would be much better if Google gets its rollout more streamlined.

So, whether we like it or not, AI is the way forward, and we will have to live with it; adapt or perish!
