Local/Online Video Stream Issue on macOS Tahoe [Fixed]

In this guide, we will show you various methods to fix the local and online video streaming issues on macOS Tahoe. I have usually amde a habit of starting any iOS 26 or macOS 26 article with a rant about how messed up the Liquid Glass design is, and seriously, how was it approved in the first place. But let’s keep that aside for now because we now have another serious issue to deal with.

After installing the latest macOS 26 Tahoe, many users have voiced their concern that they are unable to watch local videos or stream online . In case of later, any site with HTML5 video, such as YouTube, would give out the following error message: “ If playback doesn’t begin shortly, try restarting your device ,” and they just get stuck in this loop forever. And that’s not it.

Even MP4 files do not play locally (either through QuickLook, QuickTime, IINA, etc), MP3 and M4A audio files do not play either. Weirdly, the only files I’ve found that can actually playback are HEVC encoded MOV or MP4, or ProRes MOV. If you are also facing this issue, then this guide will make you aware of a couple of nifty workarounds that should address this bug. So without further ado, let’s check them out.

Local Online Video Stream Issue on macOS Tahoe - 1

It is recommended that you try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and then see which one spells out success. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

FIX 1: Restart Mac

The benefit of this fix is that it’s among the easiest ones to carry out, but on the flip side, it will only give you temporary respite from this issue [in my case, it was for around 2-3 hours, after which the issue made its comeback].

FIX 2: Switch to a Different Browser

You can also try making a switch to a different web browser and see if it does any good.

FIX 3: Disable Add-ons and AdBlockers

Temporarily disable all the third-party extensions and adblockers that you are using, and then verify if it fixes the local and online video streaming issues on macOS Tahoe

FIX 4: Restart Router

Apart from turning off and then restarting the WiFi on your Mac, it is also recommended that you restart the router and then check out the result.

FIX 5: Switch to Ethernet

If possible, try switching over to Ethernet from WiFi and see if it spells out success for you.

FIX 6: Create a New User Account

You can also create a new user account, log in to that account, and see if the issue is there or not. To do so, click on the Apple logo at the top right> System Settings, click Users & Groups in the sidebar, and click Add User or Add Group. Then proceed with the on-screen instructions to add a new user.

FIX 7: Reinstall macOS Tahoe

If none of the aforementioned tweaks worked for you, then your last course of action is to boot your Mac to Recovery and reinstall macOS Tahoe [without a data wipe]. This is the only fix that worked for me [it has been over a day and I’m still free from this bug, fingers crossed]. So if it fixed the issue, why have I listed it at the very end? Due to the complexities and efforts involved in carrying out this fix. Anyways, let’s keep that discussion aside and focus on the steps to reinstall the OS [take a complete device backup and proceed at your own risk]:

  1. Click on the Apple logo at the top right and select Shut Down,
  2. Then press and hold the power button on your Mac until the system volume and the Options button appear.
  3. Now select Options, click Continue, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. In the Recovery window, click Reinstall macOS Tahoe, and click Continue. Now follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Also, in the settings where you select a volume, select your current macOS volume.

That’s it. These were the various methods that should help you fix the local and online video streaming issues on macOS Tahoe. As far as the official stance on this matter is concerned, the developers are yet to acknowledge this issue, let alone give out any ETA for the rollout of a fix. As and when any of these two things happen, we will update this guide accordingly. In the meantime, the aforementioned workarounds are your best bet.
