Unlocking Bootloader on Samsung Does Not Trip Knox!

No, it is not a clickbait title, it’s infact true- unlocking the bootloader on any Samsung device does not trip the Knox. To recall, Knox is a hardware component embedded in the motherboard which gets tripped from its original state of 0x0 to 0x1. As a result of this, you cannot use various Samsung apps like Samsung Pay and Secure Folder, among others.

And even if you relock the bootloader, the Knox will remain tripped, in the 0x1 state. The only way to bring Knox back to its original non-tripped state is to replace the motherboard with a new one. While you might already be aware of this stuff, what about my earlier statement about unlocking the bootloader not tripping the Knox? Well, that statement is true as well.

Until and unless you flash a custom binary or do some tweaks, such as flashing a recovery, rooting the device, installing a custom ROM, etc, the Knox will stay in its original 0x0 state, i.e., non-tripped state . So if you unlock the bootloader, do not carry out any tweaks, and then relock the bootloader again, your Knox status will remain preserved. But what’s the source of such a claim? Well, Samsung’s official documentation on this matter, which reads out as:

The Samsung Knox warranty bit is a security feature that detects if unofficial software has been installed on your phone…..The Knox Warranty Bit detects if a non-Knox kernel has been loaded on the device…..If a non-Knox boot loader or kernel has been installed on the device, Knox can no longer guarantee the security of the Knox container.

You can read the entire official documentation here and the part related to Knox here , but the gist of the matter is shown above, and the most important one is shown in bold. But let’s think of it this way-

What use will it be to unlock the bootloader and then not flash a recovery, ROM, or root it? The only reason we unlock our devices is to carry out these tweaks in the first place!

So the fact that unlocking the bootloader on our Samsung device will not trip the Knox is frankly of no benefit to us. Still, I came across this fact and thought of documenting it here for you guys. But let’s be true to ourselves and answer this- were you aware of this fact before?
