USB File Transfer Greyed Out on OnePlus 15? Try this fix!

A user recently reached out to me with a basic query [or so I thought]- the USB File Transfer option was greyed out on his OnePlus 15. There were some complexities with his device as well- he had purchased it from China, which initially had ColorOS as the underlying skin, but he had flashed OxygenOS on top of it . To my knowledge, this shouldn’t have any impact [negative or otherwise] on the File Transfer protocol.

I had also asked for the screenshot for both the Default USB configuration and Select USB Configuration pages, and it turned out not only the File Transfer, but infact the entire page was greyed out. So the likes of Charging Only, File Transfer [PTP], USB Tehtering, and MIDI were not available. So what could be the reason? Could it really be the OS change that he had performed, or something much more basic than that? Let’s find out.

Before moving over to the advanced fixes of reverting to the ColorOS, I planned on carrying out some basic-level tweaks, the first of which involved a device restart. This was then followed by using a different USB cable, a different port, and even a different PC, but none of them spelled out success for me. Then I did some head scratching and advised him to enable USB Debugging and see if it does any good. Turns out, it did manage to rectify the underlying issue! So let’s give this fix a shot and check out the result. Follow along!

  1. Head over to Settings > About Device > Version > Tap on Version Number 7 times to enable Developer Options.
  2. Then, go to Additional Settings > Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging.
  3. Now connect your device to the PC via USB cable. You’ll get a prompt, tap OK/Allow.
  4. Then search for either Default USB configuration or Select USB Configuration in the Settings menu.
  5. All the options on that page will now be available.

Rounding off, if your OnePlus 15 [or any other device for that matter] has the USB File Transfer greyed out, then just enable USB Debugging, and it will bring back the said option.
