YouTube Playback Speed Not Working on Android: How to Fix

In this guide, we will show you various methods to fix the issue of YouTube playback speed not working on Android. There are many content creators out there who tend to add unnecessary stuff to their videos just to prolong their overall length.

As to why they do so, there could be a variety of reasons, including but not limited to increasing their watch hours so as to get their channel monetized [1000 hours is required for that within a year], being able to show mid-roll ads in their videos [only videos over 8 minutes qualifies for that] or simply to increase the volume of ads in their videos.

Unfortunately, in all these cases, we, the users, are the ultimate sufferers. This is where the Playback Speed feature comes into play. As is evident by its name, it allows you to increase the playback speed of the video by 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, or even 3x. Unfortunately, as of now, this feature is not working along the expected lines on numerous Android devices.

No matter how much they increase the speed, it ultimately lowers to its default value of 1x. The problem affects both the stable version (20.28.39) and beta version (20.29.39) of the YouTube Android app, so it’s an issue of wide-ranging consequences. With that said, there does exist a nifty workaround using which you can address this bug. So, without further ado, let’s show you how this could be carried out.

Easy But Temporary Solution

Apart from using the Playback Speed option from the Settings menu, you could also do so by long-pressing on the edge of the screen. However, it has two drawbacks: the video playback speed will only increase by 2x- you have no granular control over its speed, and the speed will be back to 1x as soon as you lift your fingers. But if you are not yet ready to dive deep into the technicalities of ADB Commands, then this is your best bet, for now.

Technical But Permanent Solution

There are two ways of getting this job done- via PC or without a PC. We have listed both methods below; you may try out the one that is in sync with your requirements.

Without PC

Either refer to our detailed guide on this topic or the shorter steps given below:

  1. First off, download, install, and set up the Shizuku app.
  2. Then download and install the Canta app from GitHub.
  3. Launch it, select YouTube from the list, hit Delete > OK.
  4. You will get a Shizuku prompt, tap on Allow all the time.
  5. The app will now be deleted from your device. That’s it.

Using PC

You can either refer to our detailed guide or the shorter steps given below:

  1. To begin with, download and extract Android SDK Platform Tools on your PC.
  2. Now enable USB Debugging on your device and connect it to PC via USB cable.
  3. Then, open the Command Prompt inside the platform-tools folder and type in: adb shell pm uninstall –user 0 com.google.android.youtube OR pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.google.android.youtube
  4. This will remove the YouTube app from your Android device.
  5. Install its older version from APKMirror and launch it. The bug would be fixed.

That’s it. These were the various methods to fix the issue of YouTube playback speed not working on Android. As far as the official stance on this matter is concerned, the developers are aware of this issue , but they haven’t given out any ETA for the rollout of a fix. As and when that happens, we will update this guide accordingly. In the meantime, the aforementioned workarounds are your best bet.
